Becoming a Morning person


If you were to ask my Mum she would tell you I was always a nightmare to get out of bed in the morning. I've never been what you hear as 'being a morning person' and I could never grasp why you
would want to be, I loved my bed too much.

Over the years I have always vouched this was going to be the week I'd get up earlier.  I'd try everything from multiple alarms, to setting my alarm clock at the other side of the room, nothing really worked.  I'd spend my morning half eyed scrolling through twitter and watching snapchats only to realise at some point I'd nodded off again, phone in hand.  It was a long time bad habit that was overdue to be broken.

I read a blog post recently from my wonderful friend Victoria which you can find here which really was the kick that I needed.  Waking up in the morning to see the amount of things she had already acheived in her morning whilst I lay in my bed was something I wanted to be doing.  I don't think I am ever going to be able to adapt Victorias 4am wake up time, but if I can rise an hour earlier each morning I'll be happy.

This week I've been getting up 20minutes earlier, which on the grand scheme of things isn't a massive amount of time, but the amount I can do in those 20mins was an eye opener for me.  Small simple tasks I now had time for and they made a big difference, and my evenings are starting to become my own again.

I thought I would share some of the benefits to becoming an earlier riser I have noticed so far;

Less Stress
This is one of the biggest benefits I noticed right away was how quickly what was one of my most stressful times of the day turned into something I enjoyed. I used to sleep in until I really needed to get up and spent the whole morning rushing around. I'd often arrive into work with 5 or less minutes to spare and find myself still stressed throughout work. Your mornings really do have the power to dictate your mood for the rest of the day, so why wouldn't you make them more relaxing?


I get so much extra stuff done now. Whether its a simple task like making my bed - there is nothing I hate more to coming home to a messy bed - or hanging out the washing in the morning, it has allowed me more free time in the evenings. I am able to tick some tasks of the list before my work day has even begun and its makes me feel like I am on top of things. Write down a list of what you would like to have time to do, whether its a 10 minute Yoga video, to read a chapter of a new book or start prep for that nights dinner - set some goals and hit them.

Quality time

The thing I am enjoying the most about the early mornings is sitting down and eating breakfast with my boyfriend. He would have woken earlier than me and often spent the morning downstairs on his own. It is so nice to be able to have a quick chat and grab some food together, and I think even Pippa is enjoying the extra cuddles she gets too.

Healthier Diet
Waking up earlier allows me to have more time to eat a proper breakfast.  When we get up earlier we have less time to prepare a healthy breakfast and we are more likely to reach for something quick like a sugar filled cereal bar or worse yet - skip breakfast altogether.  I now have time to sit down and spend a good 5-10mins throwing together something simple like porridge and actually have time to let it digest.  

There is a lot to be said for some peace and quiet.  Whether its being the first up in the house and relishing in some silence, or missing the morning traffic on your way to work, the earlier you rise the more likely it is to be quieter.  I used to love taking the dog for a walk in the early hours when there was hardly a car on the road and the world was still asleep.  Or you could spend the extra quiet time getting tasks done that you usually couldn't do due to distraction or workload such as projects in work or making appointments.
There really is an endless list to the possibilites of what you could be doing! I'd love to know whether you are an early riser or someone who likes to hit snooze.  Let me know your thoughts below.
